Dumpster Rental Regulations: Navigating Legal and Permit Requirements

You have a big construction or renovation project coming up. It’s big enough that you need a dumpster rental in order to contain all the construction debris and waste. Renting a dumpster isn’t quite as easy as just plopping it down though – you need to think about legal and permit requirements. In this blog, we’ll look at what kind of permits you need for dumpster rentals in Toronto.

Do You Need a Permit for a Dumpster Rental?

In Toronto, you only need a permit for a dumpster rental if you plan on leaving it out on the street. If you are leaving it in your driveway, you can carry on as normal.

That’s all well and good if you have the space, but not everyone has that kind of room on their property. For many construction or home renovation projects, you may need to go through to process of applying for a permit to leave the dumpster on the street.

You Need a Street Occupation Permit

Before you begin your project, be it demolition, renovation, or construction, you will need a Street Occupation Permit if you are planning on occupying any area beyond your own property, such as the boulevard, sidewalk, roadway, or public lane, with a dumpster rental.

You can view the permit application form at the City of Toronto website.

Application Requirements

To submit an application, you need to submit drawings and/or traffic management plans. Your application must include the following:

·       Plans in metric drawn to scale, with the scale being noted on the plan

·       Relevant dimensions, such as the width of the sidewalk, the back of the sidewalk to the street and property lines, must be shown

·       Tie in measurements to all above-grade installations

·       All street names and municipal addresses

·       All physical details of the site, including sidewalk, trees, utility and hydro poles, fire hydrants, parking meters, street vendor locations, and street furniture (bus shelters and publication boxes)

·       Identify all the parking spaces that will be occupied by the construction staging area

·       North arrow must be shown

·       Location of street and property lines must be noted

·       Your proposal must be clearly indicated

If there are any sidewalk or public lane closures, you must write a detailed letter outlining how public right of way will be used, with details such as the duration of the closure and a proposed work schedule. These must be submitted along with your application.
